If you knew what germany is (was) famous for

Hello.

I am wondering which tenses are more correct:

context:

i am devising a post about how germany is really famous for bread etc.

Min the beginning I would like to write:

if you knew what germany is (was) famous for, you wouldn’t be reading this article.

Is “is” or “was” more appropriate?

2. Example:

if I had known germany was (is) famous for bread...

is “was” or “is” more correct?
