If you feel down, can it affect your language speaking skills?

I read a couple of books on linguistics and this point drew my attention so much.

Have you ever suffered any kind of difficulty in speaking just because you feel down, worried, upset, angry, etc? Have you ever had "good" days for speaking and "bad" days for speaking. I think I have. What have you?

I think this is absolutely true. It is true of just about any skill set. I am a native English speaker and I still have days that it seems I just cannot speak correctly or make myself understood.

  • I have seen this in speech therapy with people I work with.
  • It is not uncommon for a patient to be having a "bad" speech day if he or she is upset about something or is simply a bit down that day.

This is universal, and not just for speaking. It's a matter of human psychology that we are never at the peak of our abilities when distracted by any kind of unpleasantne
