If you don't like it, you can lump it.

If you don’t like it, you can lump it. I vaguely understand that if I want to use this phrase in an appropriate situation, I may risk killing the atmosphere, is that so? Or this is a fairly common expression and also a non offensive expression to be used among native speakers?
