Grammar

If you are or if you have

I'm confused in following 2 sentences. Don't know which one is correct.
1. If you are done, go and have tea.
2. If you have done, go and have tea.

Please help me to understand which one is correct and why

Thanks

I suppose that the grammar of both is correct, but this is what I would expect: 1. If you are done , go and have tea. 2.

  • In AmE, at least, 'do' as an intransitive verb there is no longer in use.

Hi there,

There is a thin line of difference here. In general "are" indicates state or progressing condition. But "have" means either possess or finish something.

In your sentence "have done" certainly means the work has attained completion or finished.

In case of "are done", it also means the same but it is a casual way of saying something is finished.
