0Well, Pilita, a search of the MLA and other websites did not provide me with an answer. Strictly, I see no reason why you could not. But I generally discourage my students from writing essays of any kind that require the use of 'I', as its use automatically creates an informality that is difficult to overcome, especially for learners of English.

Honestly speaking, I think in MLA style paper it is highly undesirable as it immediately adds to much formality to your work. In academic writing you should refrain yourself from all kind of informality. The only relevant place where you can say "I" is at the end of your paper where in conclusion there is always a room for personal observations and conclusions. I think that more specific info
