Actually the sentence was from a question paper of school examination where the students are instructed to put the appropriate verb in the blank. How can I change the sentence structure?

Q. Fill the blank with the appropriate verb.

I could have helped you if I --- present here. (was/were)

So, I have to use either "was" or "were". Can you help me?

Neither is grammatically correct. The question is faulty. Here are your choices:

I could have helped you if I had been present.
I could help you if I were present.
I can help you if I am present.
