If they spent more time thinking about things?

Hello everybody.

They might not put the effort into actively pursuing it. Fifty bits design assumes that much of the time, users’ behavior is disconnected from what they’d want if they spent more time thinking about things.

Would you please tell me what things refer to? Does it mean anything rather than what they really want? I mean does it refer to different things that distract them from their real wanting? Is it a conditional type 2 sentence? If so, it should be would be distracted?

Thanks ????
