If then...

I have some questions that I need you to help me out with.

1."Love is kind. If then we are to communicate love verbally, we must use kind words."
Why do say "if then"?
2.What does it mean to say "lashing out words of heat"
3."Having confessed my failure and asked forgiveness,I can do nothing more to mitigate the hurt it may have caused my friend."
Does it mean "Because or after confessing..."?
"...it may have caused my spouse"
Does "caused" mean "affected"?

4. "They pollute a potentially wonderful present"
Does "potentially" in this sentence mean "possibly"?

And thank you very much in advance

"I can do nothing more to mitigate the hurt it may have caused to my spouse."
Can I say "I can do nothing more to mitigate the hurt that may have hurt..."
Does it have the same sentence I first wrote
