If the breath was captured ...

Hi

In a certain book the author writes about breathing. She writes: Most ancient cultures taught that the breath was sacred, a means by which life was sustained and through which life was preserved, if the breath was captured by a tribal shaman.

Does it mean that if the tribal shaman captured somebody's breath he could sustain and preserve life in that person?

It seems oddly structured. Are you sure that it shouldn't read like this?—

Most ancient cultures taught that the breath was sacred, a means by which life was sustained and through which life was preserved. If the breath was captured by a tribal shaman,....(then the shaman could control...etc.)

Hi

No, I haven't made a mistake in my quotation. This is what it says. So I guess that in this case my interpretation is correct (although it's a badly written sentence)?

Oh,l see. Yes, a little poorly punctuated: no comma:

Most ancient cultures taught that the breath was sacred, a means by which life was sustained and through which life was preserved if the breath was captured by a tribal shaman.
