If structure.

Hi.

On our honeymoon, Derek told me if I ever divorced him that he'd make sure he would get custody of our son.

I can't get a good grasp of the part I've underlined. Its structure within the whole sentence seems awkward to me. The exact problematic part is the word 'that', which I can't work it out properly.

I expected something like this: On our honeymoon, Derek told me if I ever divorced him, he'd make sure he would get custody of our son.

Persian Learner On our honeymoon, Derek told me if I ever divorced him, he'd make sure he would get custody of our son. Your version is correct. That is wrong in the original sentence.

told me that ...

It seems to me a simple fronting of the if-clause, the original version being

Derek told me that {he'd make sure he [would get / got] custody of our son if I ever divorced him}.
