My friend and I were talking about a famous runner who was involved in a car accident but later made a comeback despite sustaining multiple injuries.
“If that had happened to me, I’d have probably hung up my running shoes.”

Are both options possible?
I feel like the first one implies that I’m puttintg myself in the situation when the accident actually occurred, which was in the past. The second one refers to what I’d do if it ever happened to me in the present or the future.
