if sentence

am not sure what tense is correct in the following sentence after if.

If people do nothing and just watch him ( a stranger on the street in a car accident) dying, he will die soon.

but
-->1. If people think they were in that situation, or the same thing happend to them , they would do something to save his life.
-->2. If people think they had been in that situation, of the same thing had happend to them, they would have done something to save his life.

which one is correct ?
