If plunk down means set something down then what is the meanig of "plunking down" here?

brand-new devices lack enough new, generation-specific features to warrant plunking down the money.

It's slang - it's certainly not a form of the word I've heard of in the UK. Maybe 'plonking' would be used in the UK but again, it's very informal. In terms of meaning, yes - 'putting down the money on the counter to pay for the product'.

  • 'Plunking' in informal US speech means 'hitting', so I guess you could say someone is 'hitting' the counter with their cash.
