"If it will rain" vs "if it rains"

Hi everyone, I am currently applying to a CELTA course and doing the English tasks that must be done in order to get accehim. I've finished the application and in reasonably happy with my answers. But there is one question I just can'a answer. The question is to fix the error in the sentence and explain why it should be changed. The sentence is If it will rain tomorrow, I will bring an umbrella.I changed it toIf it rains tomorrow I will bring an umbrella. The shout question is why should it be changed?

Top answer

I changed it toIf it rains tomorrow I will bring an umbrella. The shout question is why should it be changed? Because native speakers normally use simple present for future in dependent 'if' clauses.

The general rule is that will and would are forbidden in if-clauses unless the if-clause is an indirect question.

There are very few exceptions, but the most usual, in case you'd like to know it, is in a so-called 'bargaining situation', e.g., If you'll lend me $5

You can use the search box above or try Google, but I don't think you'll get a more concise and accurate rule than I have already given you. You might possibly find more examples, however.
