if it was vs were

Which one of the sentences below is correct?

1. I really want to talk about this but I would really prefer if it were outside of a classroom.

2. I really want to talk about this but I would really prefer if it was outside of a classroom.

Anonymous Which one of the sentences below is correct? Both are fine. In my opinion, however, the first one is classier and the one you should use if it's on an exam.

I call it the were-instead-of-was- after-if rule, or for short, the if-were rule.

People have invented different names for it, and yes, "subjunctive" is one of them.

It is not really necessary to have a name for it, though, as long as you remember what to do in if-clauses.
