If it hadn't been for my boss, my skill would have

It it hadn't been for my boss, my skill would have ..................(may be breaked/stopped)

Please correct this sentence. If possible, give me new fine words to place after "my skill would have ......................"

I think the sentence means : "If my boss hadn't motivated me, I might remain dormant and my skill hadn't been shown to others".
