If it does nothing else

Hi teachers,

An old piece of news excerpts:

Many of these countries wrongly assume that terrorists couldn't gain access to nuclear materials and wrongly figure that if a device were to detonate, it would do so in the U.S. or Israel - not where they live. If it does nothing else, the summit will disabuse Obama's peer group of these myths and elevate the issue to the presidential level.

Can you please tell me what does that mean, and what "it" refers to?

Thank you.

"It" refers to the summit. The sentence says that the summit will, at the very least, raise awareness about the possibility of a nuclear threat (even outside of the US and Israel) with those people (Obama's peer group) who used to think it wasn't possible.

The intended meaning is "Even if the summit does nothing else, it will still raise awareness about the threat of a nuclear attack (by debunking those old myths that some people still have)"

Hi Ivanhr,

Thank you for your help.

I understand the meaning, but I just don't understand "does nothing else" mean in the sentence.
