If is/are + adjective

Hi

I would appreciate some help with this sentence:

I won't trust statistics that I don't even know if are true.

Does this sentence sound odd without 'the' "...if [they] are true"?

Delete the "if."

I won't trust statistics that I don't know are true.
I won't trust statistics if I don't know they are true.
I won't trust statistics when I don't know if they are true.
