If I was/were

Hello,

I'd like to ask you if there is any situation, in which "if I was" is more preferable than "if I were".

What about conditional sentences in reported speech, is it correct to use both forms?

"He told me that if I was/were hungry I was to eat a sandwich"

Thank you

In modern British English many people accept 'if I was' all the time. Only 'was' is correct in: He asked me if I was going to the party.
