If I was - If I were

Hi !

I´m a bit confused.. I ve always thought that correct was "if I were you....I would...." but then I read on a special conversation book "If I was you" . Can someone explain me this point??

were is considered 'more correct', especially for formal situations. In ordinary conversation, you may hear either was or were . Personally, I use were , and I recommend that you use it as well, but be aware that many people use was .
