If I say "hello" and you reply "hi", do I have to reply to it with a "hi"?

I've been told I lacked greeting etiquette because I don't reply to "hi" with a "hi". ie

Me: Hello

Weirdo: Hi

Me: Hi

Am I rude if I only say "hello"? ie.

Me: Hello

Weirdo: Hi

Thank you,

A greeting exchange does not usually include three parts. In the case at hand, one person says "Hi" or "Hello" and the other person says "Hi" or "Hello". You don't have to match "Hi"s or "Hello"s.

No, because there is no strict rule about it.
