"If I met you I would think you are American" or "If I met you I would think you were American"?

Hi. Which one is correct? If both, then is there any difference in meaning?

The one that I just came across is:

If I met you I would think you are American.

but to me this sounds better:

If I met you I would think you were American.

and is also the one that I would use.
