It's a special grammatical pattern that is used for if statements.

If [past tense] ..., ... would ....

If I had nothing to do, I would be bored.

The pattern "if + past tense, ..past tense" can be used when you're talking about past, factual events. For example, it's possible to say

If he had nothing to do, he was bored. (at this point we can't verify whether he had nothing to do in the past, but if he did, he was bored)

For eg: If he had the money,he would buy a car.
In this sentence had is not past.Am I right? He doesn't have enough money now, so he can't buy a car.

Thanks

Yes and no. It is past in form, but imagined present or future in meaning.

CalifJim imagined present or future in meaning.
How do we know if it's imagined present or future?
