If I couldn't then I will...

I was asked to make a reservation for a hotel by my wife during lunch break.

I will try calling the hotel, but a room might not be available.

I want to tell her if a room is not available, I will call her so she can find other hotels that she wants to stay.

Can I say, "If I couldn't make a reservation, I will call you", or should I say "If I can't make a reservation, I will call you?"

I would use the second, since you are talking about the future.
