"if he were" or "if he was" ??

For more formal English,

I am pretty sure that we should use "if he were" in conditional sentence for unreal present situations.

e.g. If he were you, he would apologise. but NOT "If he was you............"

How about reported question? (This is something I am not sure)

Which one is correct?

A. Mary asked Peter if he were happy.
B. Mary asked Peter if he was happy.

or both correct?
