If ... had been

If there had been a goddess XY she must have been on her image.

I wondered about the meaning too

The poet Chaucer has a character, the Prioress. And there you could say...

"If there had been a goddess of love, she would have been on her brooch"

The fact that 'she' and 'her' are not co-referential still bothers me, though.

It took me a little time to figure out that 'she' is the goddess and 'her' is the prioress. Maybe I'm just slow.
