If King’s Landing mourned its dead boy king, Jaime would never have known it. On the Street of Seeds a begging brother in threadbare robes was praying loudly for Joffrey’s soul, but the passersby paid him no more heed than they would a loose shutter banging in the wind...
Context: Joffrey is the dead boy king.
Hi, dear teachers. I have previously asked this here:
https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/if-king%E2%80%99s-landing-mourned-its-dead-boy-king.3381488/
And I know the original sentence implies "If King’s Landing mourned its dead boy king, then, even if he had looked for signs of mourning, Jaime would never have known it"
But now if I change the original sentence into "If King’s Landing had mourned its dead boy king, Jaime would never have known it", does the altered version fit into the context?
If it does, then does the altered version imply "Even if King’s Landing had mourned its dead boy king"?
Thank you so much.
