If I could choose any car I liked, I'd...
If I could do anything I liked, I'd...
We normally use would/could/might + bare infinitive or the Past Simple/Past Continuous in the If clause (Conditional 2). Why is 'I liked' correct here? Is it always like this?
Regards,
Valeria
Valerie Leri We normally use would/could/might + bare infinitive "If I could choose" and "If I could do" are of this pattern. "liked" is part of the phrase "any car I liked" or "anything I liked", which is somewhat separate. I would say that "liked" is the "unreal" past, used to describe an imagined situation.
