because i found this examples:

and I am a little bit confused.

Thanks.

Hi,

If you wish to be polite, use "Would you mind if I smoked?" By saying this you accept any answer to come, either a positive or negative one. "Would you mind if I smoke?" - It shows that the smoking is very urgent for you. You're likely to smoke anyway.

Thank a lot I didn't expect such a big difference.

Is it always working like that ?

(for irregular verbs it will be second or third form ? )

orim-"Would you mind if I smoked?"
This is a type 2 conditional sentence.

orim-"Would you mind if I smoke?",
Not wrong, but I prefer "Do you mind if I smoke?"

Hi,

Generally, yes. It's more polite.

Would you mind if I opened the door?

Would you mind if I took it?

Would you mind if I looked at it?
