If clause

i'm a student. please help me. is this sentence correct?
"if she were him,she would not do that.it was because she was too stingy.

im confused with "if" clause.if i write an essay about dream/wish that starts with "if i had....", should i use all past tense for the whole essay? or i just need to use past tense in the sentence that contains "if"?
