I am not sure! We mix type II with type III when we are describing ongoing circumstances in relation to a previous past event. For example:

I believe we have many discussions on the conditional questions and if I remember correctly, we never come to a unanimous agreement, simply because of interpretation differences and how the question is structured. Reading this one, I agree with Marious on [A] and also from my angle, [E] is possilbe as well in a casual conversation, I am not really particularly confortable with the first part of t
