If and would

Hello,

What's the rule regarding the if...would... structure as in:

If we were in a different situation I don't know [if we would???] handle this any better.

I know "if" and "would" do not belong together but how can you rephrase to make it sound idiomatic?

I am not clear on what rule concerns you, but your sentence is fine. When 'if' = 'whether', then 'would' lives happily with 'if'. If we were in a different situation I don't know if we would handle this any better .
