If all you wanted was love, Why would you use me up,

If all you wanted was love, Why would you use me up,

I saw this sentence in a song and why is use me up, not use me written? Is there a meaning difference between use someone up and use someone?

Thank you so much in advance.

"Use up" = take so much, that something becomes empty of what is being taken. In the case of people, to exhaust them so they are made quite weak. Love is not a material, so if it's the only thing you want you should be able to continue to have love without using the person up (empty/exhaust them).

  • Your sentence is saying they were also wanting something else that wasn't love, and that "emptied" them.

Thank you so much and can I also say either Stop using me up or Stop using me for the same meaning?

"use" someone = selfishly take advantage of someone only being a friend for selfish gain, without necessarily "emptying them" - this is slightly different from "use up"

Stop using me up is grammatically correct but you'd not usually say it that way; perhaps "(Please) don't use me up"
