If

Hi pals !

I was listening to Miley cyres' newly released song Cant be tamed that a verse drew my attention :

If you are gonna be my man, understand

To be honest with you I had never heard anyone use the future tense after conjunctions like if or when . Is it possible to do so ?

tnx

It can be done, but song lyrics are never to be judged grammatically-- rhyme, rhythm and contemporary casual spoken language overpower grammatical considerations.

Yes, it's possible in English, with if but not with when.

If you will be in town next week, let's do lunch.

When you're in town next, let's do lunch.

The quote from the song implies "if you intend to be" (sort of a present tense expression).

"gonna" ("going to") isn't exactly the future tense. Philip has the key. "going to" can mean "intend". In the context given, it's almost a warning.

Compare:

If he's going to take that attitude, I'm not inviting him to the party.
