Sould I use HAD intead of HAVE?

The pairing is: has - can / had - could

If we have a chance ..., maybe we can take ...

If we had a chance ..., maybe we could take ...

if we have a chance is correct, it sounds correct and it is grammatically correct based on some books......

Hi Salam,

As Jim says, the accepted pairing is 'have/can' and 'had/could' and those answers would be expected for tests, and in normal instances of good writing and speaking.

Your sample appears to be a dialogue of some sort, and in spoken English, your 'have/could' pairing is possible, with 'could' indicating more politeness or diffidence. 'Could' is more remote than 'can'. C
