Topic 25: More and more people are migrating to cities in search of a better life, but city life can be extremely difficult. Explain some of the difficulties of living in a city. How can governments make urban life better for everyone?

In recent decades, urban areas have become attractive to citizens as they are believed to give higher living standards than other regions. However, there are still challenges that urban inhabitants would face, which requires great efforts from the authorities to handle them.

The main problem would be the high living costs in cities. It is primarily because the cost of necessities is highly prohibitive, together with the fact that migrants often do not have many of them available such as housing, food source and means of transport; so they have to spend more than usual. Another issue is the different lifestyles in cities compared with other regions. For example, while urban residents tend to lead a fast-paced life and apply advanced technology in their daily life, it is unfamiliar with people in the countryside or small towns. Besides, the environment in metropolitan is packed and contaminated due to the effects of industrialisation, which is hard to adapt for those who get used to the fresh air and peacefulness in their hometown.

However, there are several steps that authorities can take to tackle these problems. Firstly, they should invest more in social housing by collaborating with private companies or calling for support from national government. A second step would be to raise the efficiency of public transport system to gradually reduce private vehicle using. It would not only help limit traffic congestion, but also minimize the carbon footprint of private vehicles. Finally, local governments can establish voluntary organisations to support migrants to the cities. Volunteers would assist them in finding housing, transportation, paper procedures and even emotional issues related to homesickness or culture shock.

In conclusion, governments can implement various measures to address the existing challenging in urban areas which significantly enhance the living standards of all city residents.
