The description can start at any point in the cycle, but the evaporation of ocean water into the atmosphere is a good beginning point. The earth's atmosphere contains water vapour, about 80% of which is from the oceans and 20% from water sources on land. As the water evaporates, it rises above the surface to a point where the heat of the sun causes it to condense into clouds. Clouds are blown by the prevailing winds, and some of them will drift above a land mass, where cooler conditions cause them to precipitate liquid water in the form of raindrops or snowflakes. This water can be stored on land in lakes or as ice in the high mountains.
