IELTS WRITTING TASK 1

When we describe data, we often write "From 2003 to 2007 the number of visitors traveling abroad to the coast was the most significant increase"

Can I write "from 1987 to 2000, the numbers for the coast were the most significant increase"?

And I can replace "the number of visitors traveling abroad to the coast" with what word?

Thank you
