IELTS Writing - Task2 - Thule

TOPIC: In some countries, many more people are choosing to live alone nowadays than in the past. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

It is becoming increasingly common to see a recent trend that more and more youngsters prefer one-person household. From my point of view, living alone brings a number of benefits and also causes some problems in terms of individuals and society.

On one hand, the rise in one-person household would be advantageous for both personal and economic reasons. From an individual level, one person is more likely to develop a strong sense of independence and self-reliance than the one who lives with family or friends. Many of my friends who have lived alone since they were in high school, for instance, are surprisingly good at cooking, doing housework and managing their own budget to pay for electric and water bills. From an economic standpoint, the bigger number of people who live alone, the more tax they pay for the government as individual tariff. In addition, an increase in one-person household enhances the growth of the construction industry, estate agencies, and a whole host of other companies and factories that rely on homeowners for the consumption of their services and products.

On the other hand, opponents to this trend might believe that downsides of living alone should not be overlooked. Firstly, people who live alone may experience the feeling of loneliness, worry and isolation. Worse still, they may have sudden health problems and FIND no one to help. Moreover, the trend towards living alone can be negative in the way that they miss out the emotional daily support from their family and friends; they can hardly have any once close enough to bring a warm conversation when life is tough. Next, from financial concerns, a rise in the housing cost would push up to the estate prices and rents, which causes homeowners to face higher living costs.

In conclusion, the trend of living alone among generations of today world give way to desirable results; however, it would lead to some detrimental consequences related to emotion, economics and living expense.
