Ielts Writing Task2

Prompt: Many people go to university for academic study. More people should be encouraged to do vocational training because there is a lack of qualified workers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Whether entering university or embarking vocational training has become a source of controversy among school leavers. From my point of view, although academic pursuit is of benefits, more people should choose to become an apprentice for both personal and social gain.

On one hand, people have a propensity for tertiary education with a desire to secure a decent job, which is highly respected and safe in the future. The first reason for this is that the majority of people regard white-collar occupations, such as: doctor, lawyer and the like as prestigious and glittering career. Therefore, parents are likely to orient their children towards such professions. In addition, the health and safety in the workplace for these kinds of jobs are more convenient and ensured. It is obvious that working at the construction in extreme weather is not so comfortable as in a department fitted with modern facilities.

On the other hand, more school leavers ought to consider joining vocational training course for their own interest and the increasing demand of the society. Firstly, vocational course will enable people to take gained knowledge into practice, thus leading to more job possibilities. For example, apart from learning purely the theory about how a car operate and run, one will get the chance of knowing how to repair a broken car. With that knowledge and skills, he can establish his own garage to earn a living. Furthermore, because of the aforementioned trend, there is a shortage of manual workers, such as plumbers and electricians. The growing need for maintenance and construction requires more people to enter the manual workforce for the development of the whole society.

In conclusion, while scholastic pursuit associates with a large number of advantages, more people should gear towards manual jobs for mutual interest. However, school leavers ought to make decision based on their situation, capability and the demand of society.
