ESSAY TOPIC: Some people think that zoos are cruel and should be closed down. Others, however, believe that zoos can be useful in protecting wild animals. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
People have different views about whether zoos are the utilitarian approach to preserving wildlife species or not. While it has been argued that zoos should cease to exist due to their inhumane conditions, I believe it is reasonable to consider zoos as idealistic places to protect wild animals.
There is no doubt that some zoos cause harmful impacts on wild creatures. First and foremost, species that are kept in zoos with a limit of living space are relatively losing their natural habitat. Tigers in their native environment, for example, are able to run and chase prey over a large extent, which is impossible when being kept in an unnatural environment. Apart from that, some zoos neglect taking care of their wildlife animals since they are unprofitable when doing that work. This is because several zoos solely concentrate on making a profit rather than protecting wild species, which is unethical treatment of animals.
Nevertheless, there are several zoos that have the precise purpose of conserving wild creatures. It is clear that zoos shelter animals from the threat of the natural environment, such as avoiding predators as well as controlling the risk of animals murdering their own kind for territory. Thus, zoos would reduce the possibility of wild creatures' extinction and protect them thoroughly. Furthermore, there are several breeding programmes taking place in zoos because they provide safe environments while reproducing more offspring for endangered creatures. Therefore, zoos not only protect wild creatures but also increase the diversity of threatened species.
In conclusion, although zoos have some negative effects on wild animals, I believed that their purpose of conserving wild species would exceed above all.
