IELTS Writing Task 2 : Traffic Roads

Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

My answer:

Punishments for driving offences are widely thought to be the solutions to decrease traffic accidents. Other group of people, conversely, holds a firm belief that there are better ways which would be more effective in promoting road safety. I side on with both views for the following reasons

On the one hand, strict penalties are the measures to prevent travellers from outrageous traffic accidents. Higher level of traffic punishments is a warning to dangerous drivers, meaning that it help people avoid repeating the same offences in the future.For example, there are many types of disciplines such as license suspension, driver awareness course, even prison sentences. Those penalties act as deterrent and make unconscious drivers know that their misbehaviours do harm to the public. If those fines are indeed passed, travellers are likely to be more responsible for their driving and they follow the rules more carefully

Additionally, others solutions are also useful without punishing the wrongdoers.Firstly, the authorities should improve the road design on the grounds that poor quality of infrastructure could lead to death traps.For instance, proper signs should be erected, speed bumps and road bends could calm the traffic and cameras deters people from driving too quickly without awareness. Moreover, consciousness-raising campaigns are ought to be launched to educate drivers how to drive harmlessly.Finally, the government should invest in public transport to maximize the safety of travellers, in the sense that buses and high-speed trains are controlled by reliable and qualified drivers.
In conclusion, I believe strict punishments are needed to be introduced , along with a range of measures from the authorities.
