Topic: Sending criminals to prison is not the best method of dealing with them. Education and job training are better ways to help them. Do you agree or disagree?
Prison is usually the most common punishment for all levels of crime. While some people argue that imprisonment should be replaced by more effective ways to help offenders such as education or vocational training, I completely disagree with this criminals treatment.
On the one hand, it is believed that non custodial sentences are likely to play an important role in helping offenders reintegrate back into society. For example, vocational education provided by the government may create a favorable condition for criminals to accumulate knowledge and essential job skills in order to land an occupation when they are released. In this way not only can they repay their community but also set a limit on re-offending chance. Another benefit is for the government as this is a solution for prison overcrowding which has imposed financial burdens on the national leaders for the cost of prison maintenance and expansion as well.
On the other hand, I strongly believe that education or job training is not a sufficient punishment. Law breakers, especially in major crimes, tend to pose a threat to the society if they are not locked up, away from other people. Therefore, only by putting them in prison can the authority ensures the safety for other citizens. Also, there is little room for doubt that imprisonment sentence serves as a way to give justice to the victims of a crime. This means that it is the criminals themselves that should get what they pay for and therefore be deprived of freedom in order to pay for the victims' loss.
In conclusion, I totally opposed to the view that it is better to utilize non custodial method of sentences rather than putting offenders in prison, because I believe that those who commit a crime should be put in prison for the sake of the whole society.
