Topic: Some say that because many people are living much longer, the age at which people retire from work should be raised considerably.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is thought that due to the increase in the age span, the age at which people retire from their work should be lengthened. However, in my opinion, retirement years ought to remain unchanged, leaving opportunities for the younger generation and giving them more time for their hobby and grandchildren.

First, though being experienced is of crucial importance, the productivity of the work also depends much on skills and up-to-date knowledge. In other words, the young are able to get access to advanced education and well-trained to be experts in a variety of occupations, which people from the previous generation may lack. For example, when recruiting new employees, recruiters no longer make experience-based decisions but the qualification as well. Thus, increasing the years of retirement may have a negative impact on the job opportunities for youngsters.

Second, health and joy are by far more valuable than money. The older people get, the more likely people suffer from sickness, let alone the stress from heavy workload on a daily basis. This may get them overwhelming, which is clearly detrimental to their physical health. Instead, the joy gained from spending time with family and interests would be a plus for their mental health.

In brief, it would be unhealthy for those whose working years are raised considerably because retirement is when people take good care of their health and allocate time for family. In addition, it is vital that the young have chances to prove themselves as potential citizens, the main source of work that a country relies much upon.
