IELTS Writing Task 2 Test 1 Cambridge 13

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause severe social problems as well as practical problems.

After spending a year working in Malaysia, I have come to realized that while living in a country where people people speak a different languages than yours can be a exciting experience, it can also cause you some serious troubles, both socially and practically.

First and foremost, awkward moments are unavoidable. Learning the language beforehand might be the one of the key tips everyone would tell you before you move to other country. However, no matter how well you have prepared yourself for this, you will always end up being in situations where you don't fully understand what the others are saying, or sometimes not at all. Why? Because language are so sophisticated. There are history, customs, and culture attached to it that take foreigners years to acquire. And unfortunately, sometimes, it just takes more than dry basic greetings to become friend with local people.

In professional practice, not being able to use the language efficiently as natives can hinder your career advancement. Adequate working English seems to get you through your day as a corporate staff but it is definitely not enough if you want to work in higher position. Not mention you direct supervisor find it difficult communicating with you, you might stress yourself out due to being unable to understand your own staffs.

All in all, I don't say it's impossible for everyone to live in a foreign land, just be mindful of all the challenges and get yourself the best preparation in advance.
