People are having more and more sugar-based drinks. What are the reasons? What are the solutions to make people drink less
Sugary beverages seem to be a regular part of most people’s lives. In fact, the consumption of these products is increasing. From my perspective, this can be attributed to the advertising of these drinks. And the solution to this problem is to impose heavier tariffs on soft drinks and educate people about the harmful effects that those drinks have on people's health.
To start with, the vigorous commercial promotion of the drinks might be the primary reason for this problem. Nowadays, soft drinks are astonishingly ubiquitous. In reality, they can be found in many places such as commercial breaks, advertising panels, magazines, and even sports competitions. And these commercials are getting more and more creative and persuasive. For example, Pepsi’s products today carry endorsement from not only famous singers and athletes but also people making viral videos. With such ubiquity and creativity, soft drinks easily stimulate consumer’s curiosity and encourage people to buy them.
Fortunately, there are two promising solutions to this problem. First of all, governments should impose heavier taxes on sugar-based drinks. By doing so, the number of sugary beverages available to consumers might be curbed. Otherwise, the prices would be higher, which, I think, might discourage some groups of people from using them. Furthermore, dealing with this problem also involves educating people about the negative impacts of these products have on people’s health. If this is implemented, people would be more health-conscious and start drinking other alternative drinks such as tea instead of sugary drinks.
In conclusion, I believe that the advertising of the drinks is the main explanation for this. And the problem can be addressed by imposing heavier taxes on these sugary beverages and educating people about the health risks that those products have.
