IELTS WRITING TASK 2: SUBJECT CHOICE

Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others think that they should be allowed to study subjects those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

It is thought by some that university students should opt for science-oriented subjects, while others believe that they should be allowed to choose their fields without any obligation. In my opinion, it would be better for students to be forced into certain key subject areas.

On the one hand, certain people assert that higher education students should focus on completing degrees in medicine, engineering and information technology and I agree. From a personal perspective, the jobs that students may procure after completing these courses are often in high demand, which obviously will solve the problem of unemployment among graduates. In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, as many hospitals are lacking in personnel, graduates with a degree in medicine can qualify as health workers. From a societal level, a focus on science and technology in tertiary education can lead to new inventions, economic growth which ensures the prosperity of countries that wish to advance.

On the other hand, students should opt for their preferred study areas. If students are passionate about what they are studying, their studying productivity will be greatly improved, leading to higher academic performance. As a result, society will reap the benefit from a knowledgeable workforce. Furthermore, creativity can arouse if students could study in comfort. This is of great importance as employers are shifting their focus from technical, operational skills to creativity and innovative thinking.

In conclusion, while it seems that students should be allowed to choose their preferred subject areas, my view is that universities should pay more heeds to key subjects areas that are valuable to the society.
