How true do you think this statement is?

What measures can governments take to discourage people from using their cars?

Thirty years ago owning a personal vehicle was considered a luxury, but nowadays it is almost if it is mandatory to have one. As a result of this trend, some people argue that roads are becoming heavily congested. Personally, I agree with this statement for the following reasons and would like to suggest ways for city officials to solve this alarming issue.

Firstly, due to technological and scientific advancements in the vehicle industry, cars are becoming better and cheaper than before. Especially, citizens of the most developed countries can easily afford to have one vehicle per household and some households even have one for each person in a family. In other words, some societies treat owning a car as owning a smartphone or some other digital device.

To solve the issue of traffic jams, governments should try decreasing the number of vehicles in roads. One of the most efficient ways to achieve this is to improve public transportation, so that people will be more inclined to utilize it to get their destinations. A good public transportation should have a vast network of locations, fast, cheap and efficient. Additionally, some nations, such as Singapore have been successfully handling traffic issues by imposing higher taxes on car owners. In this way, people would have a chance to reconsider if it is really essential to purchase at a higher price.

Due to significant progress in the industry, it has never been easier to own a car. As a result, traffic congestion has turned into a real problem for many cities. In order to solve this problem, public transportation needs to be improved and extra taxes should be implemented for car owners to let them know the real cost on society.
