[IELTS WRITING TASK 2] PUNISHMENT OF CRIME. I APPREACIATE EVERY INPUT

Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should always be taken into account when deciding on the punishment. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion

People have different opinions when it comes to penalizing criminals. Some people support the idea of having a predetermined punishment for each crime. While others argue that various factors such as motivation and circumstances should be put into consideration before a convict receives his sentence. I believe both of these approaches have their own perks and should be utilized accordingly.

On the one hand, establishing a standard set of punishment for each crime would make it easier for both offenders and law enforcement officers to abide by. Thus, it would result in much smoother and quicker legal processes. This is can be seen clearly in two areas where this method has proven to be highly efficient, they are traffic violation and minor civil cases. Oftentimes, people who park illegally or disturb public order would be required to pay a small fine or be sent to do community service. These penalties are not too harsh to cause any unfairness, but not too light so that the offenders would be deterred from repeating their unlawful acts.

On the other hand, there are many extreme situations where acting rationally and upholding the law are not mutually inclusive. In those cases, we need to look for all the influential factors that lead to the crime before reaching any judgment. A person who commits a justifiable homicide to defend himself or to protect his loved ones should not face the same charge as those do it out of cold blood or to profit themselves. A mom who steals to feed her baby should be judged with kindness and empathy.

In conclusion, fixed punishments and flexible ones both have their areas of coverage. They can exist together to serve our judicial systems.
