Some people believe that people who read books can develop more imagination and language skills than those who prefer to watch TV. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Nowadays, though multi-media products have dominated the entertainment industry and owning a modern device to enjoy these products has become common for everyone, books still maintain their importance in our lives. Some people say that our positive imagination and the ability to use language effectively can be enhanced if we spent time reading books rather than watching colorful animations on TV. I partly agree with this opinion.
On the one hand, reading books has some undeniable beneficial effects on developing our positive thinking. Because of a lack of visual display, whenever an individual enjoys reading materials, he has to picture himself the events happening in the article or book, both the background and the main characters. For example, if the author writes about two people making an appointment in the morning, I immediately visualize that they stand on a balcony, with a high tree standing next to them and the shining sunbeams through the trees. Therefore, the imagination and creativity can be definitely developed well because, with the same lines in one book, different people create different pictures for it. Besides, the writers always use proper grammar and vocabulary in a formal language, thus, by reading diversified books, readers can improve their literacy skills gradually due to get used to new words and new collocations.
On the other hand, there are some undoubted advantages of watching TV for our thinking capability. First, the program directors can help audiences approach books’ content in a totally distinct way. The light, the sound and the way that actors charactered are carefully made to conduct a blockbuster. Viewers would be impressed by the gorgeous scenes that are made with substantial ideas of staff members. In the future, whenever they think about that TV program, both color imagines and voices appear in their mind at the same time. Consequently, they imagine things better. Second, conversations are utilized efficiently in TV shows, hence, watching and imitating them is a good choice for people to improve their language skills.
In conclusion, though reading books affects our thinking in a positive way, I believe that watching TV has its merits that we can use to improve our ability of creative imagination and language skills.
